About Us

Calidus Engineering Ltd was founded by Nigel Halladay, Managing Director and since December 2007 is the co-owner of the company along with Badger Explorer ASA of Stavanger, Norway. Enjoying steady growth throughout its history the last two years have seen the business takeoff both in turnover and staff numbers.

“… Badger Explorer bought into the company on recognising the technical competence and the significant contribution we were capable of making to their business goals and to ensure we would remain an accessible resource. Since then the stability and impetus that working with Badger has given us greatly enhances an already successful company and their encouragement in seeing Calidus expand into a larger but still independent endeavour will be to the benefit of all our clients” .. Nigel Halladay.

The client base continues to grow as do the technical challenges presented to us.

Calidus Engineering Ltd has two main sectors to its business – the design and development of downhole and subsea systems, currently located in Falmouth and the mechanical manufacture of the hardware and subcontract manufacturing, located in Redruth. Plans are underway to incorporate all the activities under one roof in a bespoke facility, news of which will be posted as we progress.

Falmouth
Within the Falmouth facility we have our administration, R&D, design and testing activities and is currently home to twelve engineers and technicians and two administration staff. We use SolidWorks 2009 for our mechanical CAD, SolidWorks Simulation Professional for static and dynamic analyses and Altium 2009 for electronic design, simulation and PCB development.

Redruth
Originally one of our subcontractors, we moved our small facility from Falmouth to Redruth in January 2008. Offering some 3000 sq ft the machine shop houses a capable range of lathes, mills, grinders and wire eroder. A dedicated inspection area with a large coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and a comprehensive range of metrology equipment calibrated to national standards supports the manufacturing process to ISO-9001:2000.

Typical Projects
As a quick guide to what we do, a typical project takes one of two forms, either an upgrade or modification to existing equipment or the creation of a new device to meet the client’s requirements. That being said the complexity can range from simple to “never been done before” and very challenging.

The technologies used include:

- Materials for very hostile environments
- Seals for HPHT applications - +20kpsi
- [140MPa] / 750°F [400°C]
- Heat shields and thermal management systems
- Hydraulic systems to 35kpsi
- Electronics – memory and SRO, sensors & control

Application environments range from the benign to very high pressure and very high temperature.

Normal scope of operations
UK, Europe, North America and Japan.
