Calidus Engineering will by the summer of 2011 have relocated from their existing five facilities into one new bespoke building, expanding from a combined floor space of 7,000 square feet
over three sites to 18,000 square feet in one. The centralisation will greatly improve the efficiency of operations with obvious benefits to the company and clients.
The building houses two discrete sides of the business, a research centre and a manufacturing centre.
The Research Centre houses a suite of offices, laboratories, test and assembly areas capable of accommodating some 50 engineers and technicians thus assuring the scope for expansion
that the company has set itself. As the corporate head office the Research Centre also accommodates all administration and financial functions along with meeting and conference room
facilities.
Uniquely, the Research Centre also includes a 135m (450ft) deep borehole which will be used for tool testing and will be available for third party use. A base line set of well logs will
be carried out to enhance the test facility. Further technical details will be published to assist third party assessment.
The Manufacturing Centre doubles the existing area and greatly improves all aspects of the manufacturing process. A dedicated inspection room, off-line programming area, administration and
staff facilities compliment the custom designed machine shop area.
The new building, built by regeneration specialists Priority Sites Ltd , incorporates a host of sustainable and environmentally friendly features thereby attracting a BREEAM Excellent rating. These include high levels of insulation, energy efficient lighting, solar shading, aerated taps and leak detection to minimise water consumption, sustainable ventilation systems, landscaping designed to enhance ecology, use of locally sourced materials and a SUDS drainage scheme.
The building and expansion plans have been part funded by a grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Convergence Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
